2012 Smart Fortwo - WMEEJ3BA7CK- San Diego, CA: July 22nd, 2012
I was driving on the freeway (5 lane) in my 2012 smart fortwo passion coupe in the middle lane at 65-70 mph. All of the sudden my accelerator was no longer functional. I looked down and saw that my speedometer and gear indicator were also non-functional. I was able to coast (despite heavy traffic) to the shoulder of the fast lane - it was impossible for me to get to the slow lane shoulder due to heavy traffic. I was able to use the breaks once i hit the shoulder (unsure if power brakes or not) and once stopped was unable to use automatic windows. I could not move the car out of drive for approximately two minutes. After 2 minutes i tried again to move the car out of drive and was able to put it in park. At that point i was able to re-start the car and accelerate enough to get back on the freeway. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to reach the shoulder (as it ended about 200 yards down the freeway). The experience was absolutely terrifying.

2009 Smart Fortwo Cabrio - WMEEK31X49K- Manhasset, NY: July 18th, 2012
I own the 2009 brabus model smart which comes with low profile tires that in the 5000 miles that i have driven, i have bent or cracked roughly 7 rims to the point of replacement. I am presently on my 7th and 8th broken rim with this car and on october 18th of last year i lost control of my smart on the highway leading to a horrible accident. One second i was going perfectly straight, then i could not turn at all. After the accident, the car was towed to a junk yard where the front was pretty much missing. What stood out was there was basically half a rim on the right front and no tire. I have held onto the rim and after the accident contacted smart so that they could look for metal fatigue, or some form of cause for the rim to be in that shape. I sent smart my photos of the car, the rim etc. , they received them and i never heard back. I kept the rim at home with the hopes of one day they would contact me, nothing. Recently, i brought the car back in because the front tire was "wobbling" and i was told that it was badly dented and so was the back rim as well. These are either rims 7 and 8 or 8 and 9 that need replacement. The dealer could care less about my issues, my accident or the safety of others that might have this similar product. My car is at the dealer now, two dented rims and they are looking for a "refurbished" replacement for one rim and the other does not warrant repair according to them. It is absolutely criminal how they dismiss my issue with this car. Neither the service department, or whatever useless smart customer care number they gave me do anything. Help! I am either going to get killed in this thing, or someone else will have the same issues as me and get hurt. This is not to mention, we never drive the car because it is always in the shop.

2008 Smart Fortwo Cabrio - WMEEK31X38K- Roseville, IL: May 30th, 2012
The transmission won't engage into reverse. Called for help. They had me reach under gear shift and release a cable to move car, after i did that i went to work and car wouldn't shift out of gear into park. Called and they picked it up to fix it, came back and i had no problem for a while and then it would shift but not lock into gear, rocked the car, pushed it and finally it worked, this is a repeat thing. I am having problem right this moment, i can't drive my car. I looked on line to see if there is a resolution and the internet is full of complaints of people having the same problem. Pages and pages of them. If this is an on going issue why has there not been a recall to fix all these cars? I cannot be the only complaint that came to you. There are thousands.

2009 Smart Fortwo - WMEEJ31X39K- Jersey City, NJ: April 9th, 2012
I purchased the vehicle on feb 2009 at about 62000 miles/dec 2011 - jan 2012 the airbag light came on without anything happening. I took to the mechanic who said they put it through diagnostic machine and all was suppose to be fine and they didn't know why light was on. That they had to take the car apart in order to see what was wrong. This is all very stressful as im expecting and everytime i get in my car im afraid of getting into an accident and not having airbag.

2009 Smart Fortwo - WMEEJ31X49K- Bradenton, FL: February 6th, 2012
The panoramic roof on my passion model has begun to separate from the rest of the car in the front driver side corner. It rattles when the vehicle goes over a bump and wind noise from the panel lifting occurs at 50 mph and above. Due to the force exerted by the wind and the fact that this panel is merely glued to the rest of the vehicle -not bolted, screwed, or otherwise fastened- the condition is worsening and will continue to do so until i imagine the roof separates completely in a high-speed incident. (of course i will have the roof repaired before this occurs, however, the vehicle's two-year warranty has expired. ) i find this potentially extremely hazardous defect to be completely unacceptable.

2008 Smart Fortwo Coupe - WMEEJ31X38K- Plumas Lake, CA: September 10th, 2011
Driving on ca70 south towards plumas lake blvd. Exit, braking lightly from 55 mph to 35mph to exit the freeway caused abs and electronic stability program (esp)((electronic stability control)) exclamation lights to light up which denoted the abs and esp disabled. When coming to a stop at the stop sign, the smart was shut down and restarted to reset the abs and esp for safety only to find that the transmission would not shift from park to drive and was locked into park. This created a very dangerous situation where the car was unable to be shifted to neutral to move the car into the shoulder and the car was stuck in the middle of the road with cars exiting the freeway (hazard lights were on). To get out of a dangerous situation, an online forum that discusses the smart car (www. Smartcarsofamerica. Com) showed that if the shifter is stuck into park to check and see if the brake lights in the rear were working. The brake rear brake lights were checked and there was no light emitting from them. The site stated that if there was no brake light then that pointed the problem to the brake light switch which is a known issue with the smart fortwo na451 models. A remedy was recommended to get out of park by rapidly pressing and depressing the brake pedal to get the light to come on which would disable the parking lock on the shifter. That worked and got me out of a dangerous position on the roadway where there was not sufficient time to contact the california highway patrol or a tow truck to get me off the road. I strongly recommend a recall to be drafted to replace the brake light switch on all smart na451 models as they can be defective.

2009 Smart Fortwo - WMEEJ31X59K- Brice, OH: September 7th, 2011
Six weeks out of warranty - i was driving along & all of a sudden, the car seems to think it's in neutral, won't let me change gears - was only able to coast to a safe area off the highway. Any gear i shifted to kept coming across the dash as the neutral position. Once i turned the car off, it wouldn't start again & the dreaded three bars appeared. We tried the "teach-in" fix recommended in the user manual & it worked temporarily before acting up again. From the internet blogs i've read, this was a problem in the 2008 model - an upgrade was provided for a fix. My car is a 2009 and i feel smart usa should recall the 2009 model due to this obvious defect. It's absolutely ridiculous i would have to pay for something like this when the car is only six weeks past warranty! Our dealer keeps transferring us to mercedes-benz financial since they're the one who approve the warranty issue. No one from mercedes is answering or returning our calls.

2010 Smart Fortwo - WMEEJ3BA1AK- New York, NY: September 2nd, 2011
Smart car repeatedly cuts engine power during acceleration.

2008 Smart Fortwo - 8K113856- Dallas, TX: February 9th, 2011
After stopping at a stop sign, i begin to turn right onto another street and the car's transmission slipped out of gear and into neutral. I tried to put the car back into drive, but the car would not go into gear. I started and stopped the car several times and the car still would not go into either reverse or drive. I was pushed into a parking lot. I have had previous problems with the car's transmission before. There have been multiple occasions when i started the car and could not get the car to go into reverse. After i turned the car off and on several times, the car would finally shift into reverse.

2008 Smart Fortwo - WMEEK31X59K- Sevierville, TN: January 20th, 2011
Failed component - air conditioner (fan works but no cold air). Operation has been erratic. In the summer, this was a nuisance. In the winter, it is as serious as brake loss! I have now had three occurances of ninety percent loss of visibility as a result of complete fogging of all windows. This is the result of the right ambient temp. , humidity and interior temp. Incidents occurred after driving approximately 10 to 15 miles and were virtually instantaneous (less than 30 seconds). An ac/heat blend is needed to dehumidify windows. The local dealer had this car for one week (oct 15 to oct 23, 2010 while it was still a nuisance problem). Did not repair because problem could not be duplicated. First complete loss of visibility on this car occurred on nov. 5th. When i was informed by my dealer that there were no service bulletins, a letter was sent to smart customer service (address provided by local dealer) in bloomfield hills, mi. On nov. 17, 2010 and received by them on nov. 19th. No response to date. Repeat phone calls resulted in no solution. My final attempt was stopping at the dealer on jan 17th to determine if a service bulletin was issued for this problem. According to my service advisor, no bulletins had been issued and i am not alone with this complaint. My three incidents happened on city streets allowing me to safely move my vehicle to the shoulder and play with the controls until the ac kicked in. My greatest concern is having this occur while driving at a higher rate of speed or having a guard rail prevent a safe stop! (this did happen with their loaner on walden creek rd which, fortunately, is a very little traveled mountain road. I was forced to stop on the road & play with controls until ac kicked in. That vehicle had less than 100 miles on the odometer. Date of occurrence for this new loaner was saturday, oct. 23rd, incident was reported to dealer. )

The plastic roof in my 2009 smart fortwo had been cracking substantially from either heat or cleaning chemicals.

2008 Smart Fortwo - WMEEJ31X08K- Nolensville, TN: January 11th, 2011
I was leaving for work in my smart fortwo 451 on a snowy morning. My driveway is rather steep, and while slowly going down the hill the car began to slide. I applied the brakes and began slowing to a stop but was still sliding. I pumped the brake pedal and was still in control of the car when my foot slipped off the brake pedal and became wedged between it and the accelerator. I tried frantically to pull it out but it was stuck fast, and the car was accelerating (due to gravity) down the driveway. I finally was able to pull my foot out of my shoe and depress the brake, but by then i was already off the driveway and headed down the side of the hill. Luckily, i was able to stop before any damage was done, but this could have been a very serious problem had it occurred in traffic. After stopping i still had some difficulty removing my shoe from between the gas and brake pedals. I am a male with size 12 shoes.

2008 Smart Fortwo - WMEEK31X18K- Quitman, TX: July 1st, 2010
The contact owns a 2008 smart car fortwo. While driving 45 mph the contact noticed that the vehicle suddenly began to move to the right. When the contact attempted to turn the steering wheel he noticed that the tires would in the same direction which caused the contact to crash into a mailbox. No one was injured. A police report was not filed. The failure was not diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 23,000. Updated 8/25/10 *cn updated 08/27/10 updated 08/30/10*jb

2008 Smart Fortwo Cabrio - WMEEK31X48K- Bossier City, LA: May 30th, 2010
Frequently the driver's side door fails to latch even after numerous slams it still will not latch it seems to be worse when the weather gets hot. The only resolution to overcome this problem is to snap the inside release handle then slam the door to make it latch. My concern besides having trouble latching it is it becoming unlatched at some point while in motion. This problem has occurred on numerous occasions since the car was purchased.

2008 Smart Fortwo - WMEEJ31X58K- San Antonio, TX: May 24th, 2010
The car will not engage reverse at all and sometimes jumps between n, d, or a blank display on the dash readout. When this happens you can move the shifter and it will not select reverse and there is a beeping noise audible from the dash. The car must be rolled back down a hill in neutral or pushed. It has happened about 4 times in the last week. Nothing is being done to correct the failure by replacing parts or repairing parts. Car has only about 27k miles.

2008 Smart Fortwo Coupe - WMEEJ31X99K- Beaumont, TX: December 31st, 2009
I have owned my 2009 smart fortwo since december 2008 and have had this problem occur twice. While towing the smart on a trailer behind my motorhome one of the pins holding the hood broke causing the hood to come off. The hood is held on by two plastic pins and a cloth strap. The strap restrained the hood causing it to flap around the front of the car. This caused damage to all the front panels and the windshield. Luckily i was not driving the car at the time. If i had been driving when this happened it could have caused a major accident.

2008 Smart Fortwo - WMEEJ31X98K- Greenwood, IN: September 2nd, 2009
Valve stem on 2008 smart fortwo tpms (tire pressure monitoring system) is made of aluminum and corrodes due to salt. Valve stem is not replaceable so the entire sensor has to be replaced. Part was replaced with an aftermarket part (which has subsequently stopped working). Old part is available.
