2007 Harley Davidson Flhrc - 1HD1FR43X7Y- Bend, OR: July 18th, 2012
I was riding my 2007 harley davidson road king classic at approximately 60 mph with a passenger when the bolts holding the rear sprocket to the rear wheel started backing out. The heads of the bolts started hitting the swing arm and shearing off. As this happened the bike lurched violently and was difficult to control. I was able to slow and pull to the side of the road without crashing. Upon inspection the bolts tore up the rear wheel hub, the sprocket, and the swing arm. I was lucky that the back tire didn't lock up and cause me to lose control. My bike has 24,000 miles on it, i bought it new, and have had all the service and tire changes done at the dealership that i bought it from. I have had every service required and in fact it was serviced about 100 miles before this happened. As far as i know the sprocket has never been removed from the rear wheel, it does not need to be removed to change the tire. If you do an internet search using the search criteria "hd rear sprocket bolts backing out" you will find that this is a serious and pervasive problem that harley davidson isn't acknowledging. I can send you pictures and actual destroyed parts if it will help.

2009 Harley Davidson Fxdc - 1HD1GV4139K- Sunset Beach, NC: July 5th, 2012
The rear brake light switch / banjo bolt (pn: 72026-08) failed on my 2009 harley-davidson superglide custom (fxdc) causing the rear brake lights to stay on which ended up burning and melting the rear brake light lens covers. The switch also started leaking brake fluid out its end causing me to lose rear brake function. After looking on the internet for a replacement, not only did i find a recall concerning the same problem (nhtsa campaign id #11v506000) for harley-davidson touring and trike models; but i found several forum posts where harley-davidson fxd owners were having the same problem. My own local dealership has replaced 2 within the last year. Although the switch on the fxd models has a different part number, it is very similar to the ones on the touring and trike models. It has the same problem as it is located too close to the rear exhaust mufflers. By my understanding, the heat radiating from the mufflers is heating the switch to the point that the switch's inner pressure diaphram ruptures. I contacted my local harley-davidson dealership to see if they would honor the recall on my model, but they would not. Harley-davidson does have a new version of this switch (72026-08[a]) for my model. But due to the danger and severity of this problem, i am trying to find an aftermarket version that will be less likely to fail.

2008 Harley Davidson Flhtc - 1HD1FF4138Y- Livonia, MI: June 19th, 2012
At any given time the vehicle shuts down into lime mode when dtcs 1511/2135 are stored. When codes are given the vehicle will reduce speed in less then 5 seconds when traveling at any speed. My wife and i were riding with a large group of riders when bike shut down causing a near pile-up. The suspected reason for the codes is the replacement of terminals pins of the socket on the pcm wires and -or the tca terminals pins on the socket wires caused by fretting of the terminal pins. This is an on going problem on 2008-later touring, police and trike models. There is a technical service bulletin or tech tip # tt-418-1. Very dangerous when traveling at highway speeds and in groups. I feel their is a need for a recall on this problem. *js

2007 Harley Davidson Vrsca - 1HD1HFZ197K- Denver, CO: June 18th, 2012
While riding the motorcycle at city speeds, another rider on a different motorcycle riding behind me, informed my there was smoke coming out from underneath my motorcycle. I promptly turned off the road and shut off the bike. I also lost 100% of my rear braking ability. I immediately smelled something burning and had smoke coming up my right leg. I got off the motorcycle and noticed 6" flames coming from underneath the motorcycle. I tried to blow out the flames and smother it with my riding gloves, with no luck. One of the other riders in the group had a bottle of water and we quickly extinguished the flames. After further inspection, the rear brake light switch was at fault, causing an electrical short and fire of the wiring harness and insulation as well as all loss of rear brake hydraulic pressure. The fire caused significant damage to the surrounding electrical wiring, insulation and looms. I contacted harley davidson and they said they have "never heard of such a thing" which i find ironic since 1000's of riders, on line, have experienced the same as well as harley issuing a recall on the same switch for later models.

When riding the bike on the road it dies at random speeds and road conditions, i am able to restart after cycling the off/on start switch. When bike dies it appears that all power is lost including headlight, brake light, dash and signal lights, once recycling the switches bike refires and is able to continue until it happens again, sometimes it occurs three or four times in two miles, sometimes it wont happen in 70 miles, it appears that it can run in a stationary position without the problem occurring. It has been to the dealer several times and they have not been able to resolve the issue to date. Computer shows no errors or faults.

I have a 2002 harley davidson road king. When i ordered the bike i had them install a passenger back rest. The bike is 10 years old 48974 miles. My passenger and i were riding down the street and the back rest support snapped and broke on one side. The break is just above a weld. My guess is it had gotten to hot during the welding. The break is perfectly straight across. Almost looks like a it was sawed. I came way to close to losing my passenger. And she isn't a big girl about 120 lbs.

2007 Harley Davidson Dyna - 1HD1GN4167K- Mckinney , TX: May 4th, 2012
When the front brake was applied a clunk was heard and felt. Upon inspection the front brake rotor disk was shifting under the bolt heads that secure it to the rim. Torque value was verified to be within limits iaw the harley davidson maintenance manual. To find the problem requires two people. Someone must sit on the bike, continually apply the front brake and rock the bike forward and then rearward. The second person must position themselves at eye level to view the front rotor disk shifting. This condition if allowed to continue could shear the bolts and cause steering loss due to the bolt head getting caught in the brake caliper and seizing the front tire or complete failure of the front brake system.

2008 Harley Davidson Flhr - 1HD1FB4128Y- Mesa, AZ: April 9th, 2012
Bike would just shut down. Once restarted it would idle at approx 1500 rpm (limp mode). This happen twice. There no throttle response, idle was still around 1500 rpm. Talk to the dealer about my issues. Before i could finish my little speech, i was told that it was the ecm or the atc pin connectors. He describes my problem to me. They have fixed this problem in that past.
